Coinbase was founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong (former Airbnb engineer) and Fred Ehrsam (former Goldman Sachs trader) in San Francisco. The company went public on April 14, 2021, via direct listing on NASDAQ under ticker COIN, becoming the first major cryptocurrency company to go public with an initial valuation of approximately $100 billion.
Coinbase has raised over $1.7 billion in funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Tiger Global, Y Combinator, and Paradigm. As of 2024, the company employs approximately 3,700-4,000 people and is headquartered in New York (registered in Delaware), with offices in San Francisco, Berlin, Dublin, Tokyo, and Manila.
