What is SumUp?

SumUp is a global financial technology company that provides simple, affordable payment solutions for small and medium-sized businesses. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in London, SumUp has grown to serve over 4 million merchants across 36 countries including the US, Europe, Latin America, and Australia. The company's mission is to empower smaller merchants often overlooked by traditional payment providers, offering easy-to-use card readers, POS systems, and business tools with transparent pricing and no long-term contracts.

Card Readers and Hardware

SumUp offers several card reader options designed for different business needs. The SumUp Air is a compact, pocket-sized Bluetooth reader that pairs with smartphones or tablets via the SumUp app. The SumUp Solo is a standalone device with a built-in SIM card that works independently without a phone. Both readers accept all major credit and debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, as well as contactless payments and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Battery life is impressive, with the Air lasting approximately 500 transactions per charge.

Point of Sale Systems

For brick-and-mortar businesses requiring complete checkout solutions, SumUp provides comprehensive POS hardware and software. The system combines a tablet stand, receipt printer, and cash drawer with integrated card readers. The touchscreen interface allows businesses to manage transactions, track inventory, and generate sales reports. Restaurant-specific features include table management, split bill functionality, and tipping options. The POS software is modular, allowing businesses to add features relevant to their industry.

Online and Remote Payments

Beyond physical card readers, SumUp enables businesses to accept payments remotely through various channels. The virtual terminal allows merchants to process card-not-present transactions over the phone. Payment links can be sent via email, SMS, or messaging apps, directing customers to secure payment pages. SumUp also provides invoicing tools that let businesses create, send, and track invoices from both mobile and desktop apps. An online store feature allows merchants to set up e-commerce quickly with their existing product catalog.

Pricing Structure

SumUp uses transparent, pay-as-you-go pricing with no monthly fees, admin costs, or annual renewal charges for basic card reader plans. In-person transactions cost 2.6% plus 10¢ when the card is present. Online and manually entered transactions cost 3.5% plus 15¢. There are no minimum processing requirements. POS plans offer lower card-present rates but require a monthly subscription starting at $99 and a 12-month commitment.

Business Banking

SumUp offers a business checking account that integrates with its payment solutions, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for small business financial management. The SumUp Business Account provides next-day payouts for processed transactions, compared to the standard 1-3 business days for regular bank transfers. The account includes a SumUp Mastercard Debit Card for business expenses. Banking services are provided by Piermont Bank, Member FDIC.

Key Features and Benefits

SumUp delivers quick and easy setup requiring only the SumUp app and brief registration. The platform offers free invoicing tools, a business dashboard for tracking sales and transactions, and integration with accounting software like Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent. Card readers can accept payments offline, storing transactions for processing once reconnected. Customer loyalty tools help businesses build repeat customer relationships through the Fivestars App integration.

Who Should Use SumUp?

SumUp is ideal for small businesses, mobile vendors, pop-up shops, market sellers, and independent retailers who need a simple, low-cost way to accept card payments. The platform suits businesses that primarily take in-person payments and want to avoid monthly fees and long-term contracts. Coffee shops, food trucks, barbers, and boutique retailers particularly benefit from SumUp's straightforward approach. Businesses with high online transaction volumes may find better rates elsewhere.

Security and Compliance

SumUp uses SSL and TLS encryption to protect cardholder data and transaction information. Payment data is not stored within the hardware, enhancing security. The platform is PCI-compliant, meeting industry standards for secure payment processing. Transaction monitoring and fraud prevention measures help protect both merchants and customers from unauthorized transactions.
